II. Andante religioso, La Catedral by Agustin Barrios

from Tracing a wheel on water by Aaron Larget-Caplan

/

about

La Catedral is a Romantic work in passion and color, yet in style it is an homage to the Baroque times of J.S. Bach. Inspired by a visit to the Cathedral of San José in Montevideo, Barrios incorporated the procession-like movement of the organ works of J.S. Bach (mov. II) and the fleet fingered toccata (mov. III). The preludio, added in 1939, recalls the tolling of the cathedral bells through the use of style brisé, or broken chord style that was so important to Bach
